I Almost Skipped This Dress on Checkout — Here's Why I'm Glad I Didn't (ANLAN Miyake Pleated Dress Review)

 

So picture this: it's late June, I've got a work dinner and then a friend's engagement party the same week, and my closet is basically a graveyard of "I'll wear this someday" dresses that either don't fit right anymore or make me look like I'm trying way too hard. I almost didn't buy it. Honestly, pleated dresses have burned me before. I bought a similarly styled one two summers ago that looked like a crumpled paper bag by the second wear, and the pleats basically fell out after one gentle wash cycle. First Impressions: Unboxing and That "Oh, Okay" Moment

When it showed up, my first thought was actually relief. The fabric wasn't that flimsy, see-through polyester that a lot of budget "Miyake style" dresses use. It's got some actual body to it  a slight structured feel, similar to the accordion-pleat fabric you'd see on higher-end Japanese-inspired brands (you know, the ones that cost triple the price). I did the classic "scrunch it in my fist and let go" test, and the pleats bounced back into shape almost immediately. That's usually a decent sign the pleating is heat-set properly and not just pressed in for the photo.

The print was where I got genuinely surprised. In photos, a lot of these all-over prints look kind of muddy or cheap in person  like the colors bleed weird or the pattern repeats in an obvious, robotic way. This one didn't do that. The colors were a touch more muted in real life than on my screen (which, fair, that's basically true of every online dress ever), but the pattern placement actually lined up decently at the seams, which honestly impressed me for the price point.

The Fit: Where I Learned My Lesson

kay, here's my mistake, and I want you to learn from it instead of repeating it. I sized based on my usual "going out" dress size, not based on my actual measurements. Rookie error, especially with a brand I hadn't ordered from before. The dress runs a little more generous through the body because of the pleating  pleats need room to actually move and drape, so if you size down thinking "oh it'll be more fitted," you end up fighting the fabric instead of it flowing the way it's supposed to.

I ended up a size too big through the shoulders and had to get creative with a slim belt to define the waist for the party. It still looked good  pleated dresses are forgiving that way but it would've hung so much better if I'd measured myself first instead of trusting muscle memory from other brands.

Wearing It: The O-Neck and Long Sleeves Situation

 was a little nervous about the long sleeves for a summer dress  like, is this going to be a sweatbox? Surprisingly, no. The fabric breathes better than I expected, probably because of the pleats creating little air pockets instead of the material sitting flat against your skin. I wore it to an outdoor dinner where it was still pushing 85°F in the evening, and I wasn't miserable. Not ice-cold-AC comfortable, but totally wearable.

The O-neck is genuinely flattering on more body types than a lot of necklines. It doesn't scream "I have to have the perfect collarbones" the way a lot of boat-neck or off-shoulder styles do. It sits close enough to the neck to feel modest and elegant without feeling like it's choking you, which  if you've ever worn a mock-neck dress in the heat, you know that struggle.

Sleeve length hit right at my wrist, which I liked for the "evening dress" vibe it's going for. If you've got longer arms though, be aware  a few reviewers I saw mentioned the sleeves ran slightly short for taller frames, so that's worth factoring in if you're on the taller side.

A Few Things I Wish I Knew Before Ordering

Order a size down from your usual "fitted dress" size, or actually measure yourself  don't wing it based on brand loyalty from other stores.

It's more of a "smart casual to semi-formal" piece than a full black-tie gown, despite being marketed as an "evening dress." Manage your expectations there; it's elegant, not ballgown-level formal.

The print variation between batches can happen with prints like this, so don't be shocked if yours looks very slightly different in color saturation from someone else's photos online. Mine leaned a touch more muted than the listing photos, but still pretty.

Hand wash, don't machine wash, if you want the pleats to last more than a season.
